“I often try to reflect on myself and my emotions. I aim to balance my strong emotions with logic to maintain balanced relationships with those around me. During my self-criticism, I questioned why I always felt the need to be right. I realized that this is not logical.”

“Many people who believe they are always right, despite clear evidence that they are wrong by all standards, are unaware of their ignorance. In other words, I believe they are suffering from being under the influence of the Dunning-Kruger effect.”

“What is the story of the Dunning-Kruger effect?”

“A thief in broad daylight inspired the recognition of the phenomenon. In 1995, MacArthur Wheeler set out to rob a bank in Pittsburgh, carrying a gun in his hand, but he was not wearing a mask. Surveillance cameras were able to identify him, and his picture spread in the local news. Wheeler had learned that he could make invisible ink using lemon juice, which would only appear when exposed to heat, so he wanted to use this technique for disguising himself during the robbery! Wheeler smeared lemon juice on his face and deliberately avoided exposure to heat so that his face would not be revealed to the surveillance cameras. Meanwhile, David Dunning was working as a psychologist at Cornell University, and Justin Kruger was one of the graduate students. After the story of Wheeler spread, they wondered: How could Wheeler be so confident in a plan that was clearly stupid? Thus, the effect was named after Dunning and Kruger.”

“Up to here, dear reader, I must stop to leave you space to think, not about this miserable thief but about yourself and me… Am I right this time as well?”
