In 1922, when Albert Einstein was declared the Nobel Prize in Physics winner, he traveled to Japan and stayed at one of the hotels there.

At that time, a room service employee offered him a cup of tea as per his request. Einstein wanted to tip him with some money, but when he reached into his pocket, he found nothing. So, he took a piece of paper, wrote a few lines on it, and asked the waiter to keep it, indeed that happened.

In 2017, this paper appeared from a relative of the waiter’s family who asked to verify its authenticity to sell it at an auction. The paper was examined and confirmed to be authentic, with the writing on it in Einstein’s own handwriting.

The auction started at five hundred dollars and ended at one million three hundred thousand dollars for the paper that had the following phrase written on it:

“A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.”
